Carpe Diem

08 Jan

It seems everywhere I look this week, I’m confronted with this idea.  Its like God’s rented a billboard that says  “Sharon, get off your butt and accomplish something!”  I’m not a resolution person.  Never have been.  But 2013 brings me to a place where I need to make plans.

A friend of mine shared a photo on Facebook that read “When is the last time you started something for the first time?” and I gotta be honest.  It’s been a while.  When I think of talking to Becky about how we spent the time waiting for her to join our family, the last thing I want to do is say “Well, there were some good Love and Hip Hop reruns on…”

So with that in mind… some of the goals I’ve set for myself for 2013 are:

1) Read.  Read Read Read.  When I was a kid, I LOVED to read.  Anything I could get my hands on.  Child the 3rd has (THANKFULLY) inherited my love of books, and has currently tested at a grade 10 reading level (not bad for a 10 year old), however when he pipes up with an “I’m bored!”, and I suggest a book, he seems to feel that’s not exciting enough.  How can I expect him to want to read a book when I’m guilty of turning on Gator Boys rather then finishing that book I was longing to read?

2) Write more.  Reading, writing and ‘rithmatic… well at least the first 2.  Although my blogging has been… short… sweet and non existent lately, I actually love to write. In fact, 2 years ago I wrote a Kids book about an adopted shelter dog.  So… it’s something I want to get moving on this year.  Maybe do another Kids book.  Maybe actually work on getting the first one published.  maybe just journal more.  I don’t know where this goal will take me, but I’m excited to find out.

3)  I think if I had an option, I’d spend every day in the kitchen.  No, not eating, although lately thats why I’m there.  I love baking, and have even started to embrace the chance to cook at times.  Baking relaxes me.  Baking calms the chaos when I feel overwhelmed.  Exact measurements, timing, step by step instructions.  Its an OCD dream come true, and I’ve stopped doing it because of the aftermath.  No, not the cleaning, although I hate that part… the eating.  So now its time for me to find a way to channel that the healthy way.  I have a friend I kinda idolize, although she doesn’t know it.  As a mom she inspires me.  As a woman she amazes me, and as I watch her leap and bound into the world of natural foods, ingredients we can ALWAYS pronounce I sit back and think “I can do that!”

Obviously the other goals remain the same.  Lose weight, drink all the required water, exercise more.

Through all the plans and hopes I have for 2013, I want to talk less, listen more, speak kindness through actions, and be the mother, wife, daughter, sister, family, friend, example I was meant to be.

Maybe you’ll come along for the journey.
